Strength and resistance
Every fire door has its own specific properties and is marked in a specific and common international way. The parameters “EI” mean two things – the “E” factor is responsible for the fire tightness, i.e. the effectiveness with which the door will prevent the flames from reaching the other side. “I” is the parameter that tells us about thermal resistance, the highest temperature that can be achieved. The maximum temperature to which fireproof doors with “I” markings can be allowed is 140 degrees Celsius. There is another parameter that appears in the marking of fire doors. It is one of the numbers – 15, 30, 60, 120 – and it means the number of minutes for which the door will withstand the pressure of flames and provide effective protection in the event of fire. During evacuation actions, time plays a very important role, so reasonable selection of door strength to the conditions prevailing in a particular building is extremely important.
Smoke tightness
It would seem that in a fire emergency it is the flames that are the greatest danger. However, anyone who has come across such a dangerous situation is well aware that smoke and poisonous gases are far more deadly than fire. Fire can be completely or partially restricted by all kinds of fire-fighting systems, such as doors, blinds, flaps and curtains, but combustion fumes must be prevented from spreading because, apart from limited visibility, which makes it difficult to evacuate to safety, the fumes in 70% of fires lead to suffocation. The use of smoke-proof doors allows to minimize these effects and thus significantly increase our chances of survival.
Location
We are well aware that facilities such as shopping malls and utility buildings must be equipped with fire protection solutions. These are legal regulations and no project of this type will be accepted even if it does not include such fundamental safety issues. It is also worth mentioning that the installation of fire doors should be carried out only in places where the walls have similar resistance to the doors. Otherwise, the fire will ignore our firewall and get past it, through a less resistant material.
