Real drawer rails

We are talking about nothing less than drawer runners. They are the main component of every drawer, in a way determining its functionality. Even the most beautiful car, made of the most modern materials will be useless without proper tyres and drive. In case of drawers this drive is the runners. They decide mainly on the functionality of drawers. They can limit problematic deep drawers by using a method of pulling out beyond the body of the furniture or be as silent as Tesla with the use of the silent closing method.

Types of runners

When choosing your own slides, it’s important to understand the different types on the market.

1) Roller slides – good for DIY enthusiasts and very easy to fit. As the name suggests, it is characterised by so-called rollers, which are located on bearings. Thanks to this, each insertion of a built-in drawer becomes trivial, but also pleasant. It is also a good choice for those who would like to blend the appearance of the protruding runner into the surroundings – as there are many different colours of runners in this group. Unfortunately, if you decide to go with this option, bear in mind that this type of slide should be suitable for drawers that are not overloaded. Heavy piles of books and documents or kitchen cupboards may not be a good option

2) Ball bearing slides – unlike their predecessors, these can carry a lot of weight, making them a more responsible choice. It is their durability that is their main asset. Unfortunately, their installation requires a slightly more skilled hand. Interestingly, they are characterised by a special “Tip-on” system, thanks to which even a slight pressure on the drawer front makes it slide towards you – convenience above all!

3) Bottom-mounted runners – often chosen when the user does not want to spoil the appearance of the drawer, which in this case is usually made of wooden elements. The runner, as the name suggests, is located at the bottom of the drawer becoming virtually invisible.

Having covered drawer slides, now comes the time to buy them. Choose a good manufacturer that has slides made from strong materials. Ideally they will combine functionality with convenience.
